Darjeeling…queen of the hills…looking back…

A picture book….scraps of memories….a recent trip….November 2016

Himalayas…..the vastness of the region has so much to offer….most of the hill stations are in the Indian sub continent and some in Nepal and adjacent places……World’s first five highest peaks are in this region, with Everest as the mother of all……

Mountains attract me all the times….and I love to go back to the Himalayan hill stations for my few days of blissful existence…..and thus my November 2016 journey……

Many of you will already so much about this beautiful hill station in Bengal, India popularly known as the queen of the hills….so here are some known facts of Darjeeling…

Spread in ribbons over a steep mountain ridge, surrounded by emerald-green tea plantations and towered over by majestic Khangchendzonga (8598m), Darjeeling is the definitive Indian hill station and is arguably West Bengal’s premier attraction. When you aren’t gazing open-mouthed at Khangchendzonga, you can explore colonial-era architecture, visit Buddhist monasteries, and spot snow leopards and red pandas at the nearby zoo. The adventurous can arrange a trek to Singalila Ridge or hire a mountain bike for a guided ride around the hilltops. Meanwhile the steep and winding bazaars below the town bustle with an array of Himalayan products and faces from across Sikkim, Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet. And finally, when energies start to flag, a good, steaming Darjeeling brew is never far away.[basic info courtesy Lonely Planet].

My take of Darjeeling will be through my pictures……so here goes….

Majestic view of Kanchenjunga peak from my hotel front viewpoint..

Sprawling hills with its winding roads and picture perfect settings……homes of locals look like little toy houses on the sharp ridges….

Himlayan mountain railways better known as Darjeeling toy train is a World Heritage UNESCO site and a must visit for everyone…..and I was filled with joy of the time spent there…..a train ride through the hills…..and the stations we passed….all picture perfect…

Everywhere you go, nature is in its abundant best……

Himalayan mountaineering Institute, where the body of Tsherpa Tenzing Norgay is rested…..the first Sherpa with Sir Edmund Hillary to conquer Everest….

Early morning sunrise on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill viewpoint….a must for everyone….you will be surprised how many tourists from all over the world gather at this high point so early in the morning in the bitter cold to watch this natural spectacle of beauty……:)

These beautiful cottages offer homestays by the locals……

A pretty garden in the hills…

The world famous Darjeeling tea can be found in the several shops in the Mall of Darjeeling…..must buy for everyone….

Darjeeling….with its majestic of the great Kanchenjunga peak is an all year destination….and my childhood favourite tourist spot…..the Queen of the Hills…..

Thank You……..:)
