Cohen….a remembrance….

Yes….Cohen…Leonard Cohen….one of the greatest singer/songwriter/poet/novelist/painter, a legend…..and with that golden voice…..this is my remembrance……

The days I have started listening to Cohen and reading his lyrics, got hooked to the entire world of his, his enigmatic presence in the music world, his rebellious soul in the writing fraternity, his charismatic personality…….:)

Yes, music is truly the emotional life of most people….such is the power of expression of this medium……when Cohen passed away on Nov 7, 2016, the world lost a true representative of what we can refer to as poetic music of the highest order.

The first song I had heard of Leonard Cohen was Suzanne…….here’s the song and it’s lyrics…….

“Suzanne”

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she’s half crazy
But that’s why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you’ve always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said “All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you’ll trust him
For he’s touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she’s touched your perfect body with her mind

Born in Canada in 1934, his work mostly explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Canadian songwriters’ Hall of Fame as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cohen pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s, and did not launch a music career until 1967, at the age of 33. His songs according to me are in varied styles, Jazz, Rock, Acoustic, Oriental and Mediterranean…..and towering over the lyrics and the tunes is his voice, which can send that warmth on even the coldest of the nights.

His songs are always ornamented with his brilliant writings, such is evident in almost all of them……here’s another of his song lyrics, ‘Hey that’s No Way to Say Goodbye’…..

“Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye”

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but now it’s come to distances and both of us must try,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.
I’m not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

Leonard acknowledges that the whole act of living contains immense amounts of sorrow and hopelessness and despair; and also passion, high hopes, deep love, and eternal love. And he had abundantly expressed all these emotions in his songs repeatedly.
He has been the finest exponents of expressive art and has profound influence on his fans who stay loyal to this day for such a legend…..Rest in Peace….Cohen…..you will be remembered always…..
